Gaming Age: "Soul Hackers may as well be a new game, considering its incredibly limited release. At this rate, it's almost worth playing just to enjoy a blast from the past that you never had, but also to promote the localization of such titles; this one an ambitious experiment in party management, hinged on the consequences of the relationships with your party rather than the benefits alone. I'd find it hard not to recommend to anyone interested in an RPG with a twist, with the caveat that it may be a tough egg to crack at the start. If nothing else, there's always the hope that we'd see some return to the philosophies at play in this returned relic."

Drew Leachman writes: After being released twice in Japan, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers has finally hit the US shores in the new 3DS version. Re-mastered with both game play and 3DS enhancements, Atlus is hoping to get fans of the MegaTen series into this title while trying to leave it accessible to new players. For the most part, it does a very good job on both accounts.

"Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoners: Soul Hackers is the second game in a spin off series of Shin Megami Tensei (known best of all for its spin off subseries, Persona) that never made it to the west.
Soul Hackers was released on the Saturn (which was irrelevant in the west) and on the Playstation (which was, in fact, a haven for JRPGs, even in the west), so it is a bit puzzling why we never got it before now."

Forbes - When it comes to the world of niche Japanese games with cult-like status, Atlus Shin Megami Tensei series is among the best and brightest. Last year, they wowed fans and newcomers with their HD revamp of the PS2-era Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, Persona 4 Golden. The PS Vita title showed that despite slightly aged mechanics, the dynamic characters and story knew no limits. Once again, Atlus seeks to wow North American audiences by bringing forth another entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series, Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers.

'The Shin Megami Tensei series has been one of the flagship titles of Atlus in both Japan and North America where it has always been received well by JRPG fans. Through the many Shin Megami Tensei titles that were released in Japan, not all made their way here in North America, primarily the 1997 release of Soul Hackers on the Sega Saturn. As a plethora of games being remade or ported this generation to cater it to fans who may have missed it out when it was first released, Atlus has decided to bring the classic Soul Hackers to the Nintendo 3DS.' - JPS

PixlBit | "Get ready to ride a time machine back to the 90s. A time when we thought the Internet was something completely different than the cesspool we know today; a time when JNCOs and flannel were acceptable clothing choices; a time when we raised the roof and exclaimed everything was the bomb, yo!; a time when Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers was intended to be released in America. For whatever reason, Sony rejected the title from release on the PlayStation and in Japan it remained. Until now, that is, when Atlus finally dusted it off and brought it into the future on the 3DS. The fact of the matter is that if Soul Hackers wouldve been released when intended, it wouldve been better than tight, it wouldve been straight phat, dawg."

This first-ever English release of Soul Hackers shows its age, but the patient player will find a deep and rewarding experience.
